Supplements For Male Fertility

1. D-Aspartic Acid

Up until this time you’ve probably never heard of d-aspartic acid…  Well let me give you a crash course!

D-aspartic acid is an amino acid that’s produced naturally in the body.

Unlike other amino acids like l-aspartic acid, d-aspartic acid is essential for helping make and release hormones.

Since it’s responsible for the making and releasing of hormones, it signals the brain to make testosterone and release it to the testicles.

Without enough testosterone, sperm count and function goes down.

Although not much research is available for d-aspartic acid and fertility, there is one research study that does yield promising results.

In a study of 60 men with fertility issues, d-aspartic acid was taken for three months.  After the three month trial, sperm count and motility improved dramatically.

In fact, sperm production increased so much that 27% of the male participants got their partners pregnant during the course of the study!

To supplement with d-aspartic acid, most men take 3 grams per day.

However, with the limited amount of research the daily amount may vary.

It’s always best to discuss the supplement and dosage with a trained health professional.

Although more research needs to be conducted, d-aspartic acid shows promising results for men with low testosterone levels.

2. Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris is an herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

From studies conducted in Bulgaria, the herb has been proven to promote an increase in male fertility.

Tribulus terrestris specifically helps with two male fertility issues: Antisperm antibodies and erectile dysfunction.

For men with erectile dysfunction, DHEA levels are low.  Research has found the component protodioscin extracted from the herb Tribulus Terrestris increase DHEA levels naturally.

Because of this, men with erectile dysfunction experience an increase in sexual desire.

Another cause of fertility issues that many men and women do not recognize is the body’s ability to produce antisperm antibodies.

But what exactly are antisperm antibodies?

Antisperm antibodies occur in both men and women and is the result of the immune system identifiying sperm as a foreign invader.  When this happens the immune system begins to attack sperm.

For men, this results in antisperm antibodies damaging healthy sperm.

In a Bulgarian study, Tribulus Terrestris was given to men and women who tested positive for antisperm antibodies.

After the trial study, the results showed a 61% boost in conception.

For couples in the study, the average time to conceive was reduced to 5.2 months!

That’s a lot faster conception rate compared to not using Tribulus Terrestris!

Tribulus helps male fertility by lowering levels of antisperm antibodies.

3. Fenugreek

Fenugreek has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine for such issues as decreased breastmilk and controlling blood sugar.

But this impressive herb goes above and beyond for male fertility.

Fenugreek is used as a supplement by men to increase testosterone and libido.

In a study conducted on a 120 men, fenugreek was given each day for three months.

After three months time, the participants in the study reported an increase in erectile function and sexual desire.

Another study researching the effects on fenugreek and testosterone combined an 8-week training program and 500 mg of fenugreek.

Over the course of 8-weeks, four weight training sessions per week and fenugreek, it was found…

-An increase in testosterone.

-A 2% decrease in body fat.

Not only does fenugreek help with sexual function and libido, but it could also decrease body fat if combined with an exercise program!

Fenugreek helps boost male fertility by raising testosterone levels.

4. N-Acetylecysteine (NAC)

Again… Probably something you haven’t heard of until now.  That’s because it’s one of many antioxidants.

When antioxidant levels are low male fertility issues can become increased.

With too many free radicals in the body, cells begin to die because they’re under stress.

Antioxidants are so important because they help the body rid itself of free radicals.

Free radicals have the following negative effects on sperm:

  • Reduces sperm count
  • Changes the shape of sperm
  • Breaks down sperm cells
  • Reduce sperm energy to find and penetrate an egg

But n-acetylecysteine goes beyond destroying free radicals.

It helps men with an infertility condition known as varicocele.  Varicocele occurs when the veins of the scrotum are enlarged.

Typically, this condition is corrected with surgery.

Since varicocele is caused by free radical damage, NAC could help improve fertility in men with varicocele.

In a research study of 35 men with varicocele, they were given 600 mg’s of NAC each day.

After three months with an NAC supplement and surgery, sperm quality and pregnancy rates leapt to 22%!

Research also suggests to combine NAC with selenium to improve semen quality.  (See more about selenium below).

This amazing herb has been used for over 3,000 years to help manage stress, receive increased energy levels and a concentration boost.

Now aschwagandha has been found to…

-Lower blood sugar

-Relieve anxiety and depression symptoms

-Reduce cortisol

-Reduce cancer cell growth

-Increase muscle strength

-Reduce inflammation

-Lower cholesterol

-Improve concentration and memory

But what about increasing male fertility?  Well ashwagandha does that too!

In a study of 50 infertile men, ashwagandha was shown to increase their sperm count and motility.

Along with increase sperm health, testosterone levels also increased.

This same study also reported a boost in antioxidant levels.

A second study also researched how ashwagandha increased male fertility.

However, in this second study there was an even bigger surprise!

With ashwagandha, men experienced heightened antioxidant levels that lead to sperm quality.

Within a three-month period of treatment, 14% conceived a baby with their partners!

Aschwagandha can boost male fertility by increasing testosterone and antioxidant levels.

6. L-Arginine

L-arginine is an amino acid that’s most commonly found in foods such as kidney beans, meats and nuts.

While it supports a healthy immune system, it also support female and male reproductive function.

But since this article is all about fertility supplements for men, let’s look at how this essential amino acid aids male fertility.

First, l-arginine increases blood flow to reproductive organs.  With increased blood flow comes an increase in libido.

Second, L-Arginine boosts sperm production.

In a study on L-Arginine and male fertility, results were seen by 6 to 8 weeks after supplementing with an increase in sperm motility.

For couples undergoing IVF, L-Arginine can be supplemented to boost the quality of sperm.

L-Arginine helps male fertility by boosting sperm production.

7. Maca Root

First used by the Incan Indians, maca was used for food.

Now, maca root has been found to contain a high amount of iron, 20 different fatty acids and more calcium than milk.

Because of maca’s extreme nutritional value it is used for boosting sperm count, motility and overall quality.

Maca is loaded with essential fertility vitamins like zinc, calcium and b vitamins.

On top of better sperm quality, men also experience a libido boost.

With increasing libido, there is research that suggests that maca root can decrease the symptoms of male menopause.

I’ll admit up until this time, I’d never knew about male menopause.

But apparently when men begin to experience lower levels of testosterone, they also experience a lower sexual desire.

In turn, with a lower sex drive comes symptoms of tiredness and irritability.

Maca root is known for decreasing these symptoms of male menopause.

Since maca root is a food item, there are no negative side effects for men or women.

It’s recommended to take 2,000 to 3,000 mg per day to see fertility benefits.

Maca root helps male fertility with essential vitamins that increases sperm quality.

8. L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine is an antioxidant that boosts sexual desire by increasing the cellular function of sperm.

Since antioxidants aid in cellular health, L-Carnitine helps protect sperm from free radicals.

By L-Carnitine destroying free radicals from attacking sperm cells, it improves sperm health in the following ways…

  1. Increases sperm motility so sperm can reach it’s destination and fertilize an egg
  2. L-Carnitine prevents the development of abnormal sperm cells
  3. Increases sperm health by removing free radicals
  4. Boosts sexual desire
  5. Increases energy

L-Carnitine helps male fertility by increasing libido, sperm motility and sperm production.

Final Thoughts

Sperm health serves a very important function when it comes to conception.

Not only do sperm fertilize an egg, they also carry vital DNA for the development of an embryo.

Too many men get caught up in the idea that lower than average sperm parameters are an indicator of weakened manhood.

That can’t be further from the truth.

Whether sperm numbers are within normal range or need improvement, it has nothing to do with manhood.

The way I look at it is…  Male fertility (along with female fertility) can always be increased naturally.

Natural supplements are something to try before preceding forward with fertility treatment.

However, some of these 9 supplements can be combined with fertility treatment.

But always discuss natural herbal supplements before or during treatment with your doctor before taking them.

While not every supplement will work for every person, a supplement could be the difference between low sperm numbers and a successful conception.
