For thousands of years, people from all over the world have used herbs and wild plants to boost fertility in both men and women. As society has progressed, those age-old natural methods have almost disappeared.

4 Lesser-Known Herbs To Boost Your Chances Of Pregnancy

Red Clover

Red clover is highly prized because of its ability to boost fertility (Trifolium pratense).

It blooms in midsummer to the first frost of October, and its vivid pink (not truly red) flowers are a common sight in fields and along roadsides.

As the honeybees love this flower so much, the tops (flowers and stems) are picked on sunny days and used fresh or dried for food or medicine.

Cooked with grains like rice or millet, the flowers become even more healthy and add flavor to the dish.

One ounce of the dried flowers (fresh won’t work for this application) is combined with water in a quart-sized canning jar to create a fertility-boosting infusion.

To make tea, I pour boiling water into a jar, seal it tightly, and leave it to soak at room temperature overnight (or for at least four hours).

It’s notably useful for cases of “unexplained” infertility, scarring of the fallopian tubes, irregular menstruation, and aberrant cells in the reproductive system.

The entire effect of this herb may not be felt for a few months, and pregnancy may not occur for a year or more after use.

However, red clover has been found to increase sperm count and motility in males due to the good amount of magnesium.

For women, this herb helps regulate estrogen levels as well!

This will aid in reproductive health by increasing blood flow to the uterine and ramping up follicle and egg production.

To enhance the flavor of your infusion, try adding some dried peppermint (a teaspoon or two) along with the dried clover blooms.

Indulge the father-to-be with a cup of red clover tea as well.

Partridge berry (Mitchella repens), commonly known as squaw weed, is a little evergreen creeper that grows in the woods near your home. It is believed to increase fertility.

In the event that you want to see patridge berry in bloom, you should look for it this spring. Then you’ll understand why people have referred to her as “twin flower.”

Patridge berry is one of the few herbs that can be taken before and during pregnancy.

But, it is always wise to consult your healthcare provider before continuing use during your pregnancy!

So what makes this herb so magical in regards to fertility benefits?

Studies show Patridge berry benefits include:

Dong Quai

Dong Quai is a Chinese herbal medicine used for a variety of ailments like decreasing high blood pressure and symptoms of heart disease while reducing pain, and opening the blood vessels.

This perennial plant consists of white flowers with thick yellowish-brown roots and is harvested after it matures after three years.

Dong Quai is believed to increase sperm count and motility in men.

In women, Dong Quai is believed to help…

  • Regulate periods (specifically treating menstrual conditions like amenorrhea)
  • Increase blood flow to the uterus
  • Regulate hormone levels
  • Decrease the risk of miscarriage and pre-eclampsia

Wild Yam

Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) is often used in women going through menopause. But wild yam has also been found to give a few benefits to women who are trying to increase their fertility to conceive a child.

Although wild yam root itself does not increase progesterone or estrogen levels in the body, it does help to regulate estrogen production to balance and regulate necessary hormones.

Trying to conceive women who have difficulty with painful period may find relief with trying a wild yam supplement.

Wild yam is able to soothe menstrual cramping and reduce spasms of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. This will help tone the uterus to prepare it for implantation.

Final Thoughts

Herbal remedies for fertility are an all-natural way to try and conceive a child without the use of fertility treatment.

However, always stray on the side of caution when taking herbal supplements!

All herbal supplements should be discussed with a doctor to weigh the pros and cons and to make sure the fertility herbs are helping your fertility and not hindering it.

I’ve had many readers over the years contact me to ask which herbal supplements they could combine together.

While I always instruct them to contact their healthcare provider, I’ve also told past readers to focus on a specific fertility problem they are having and to focus on healing that issue.

For example: If you want to regulate your periods, find the best herbal supplement (for you) that will help give you consistent monthly periods.

Don’t feel you need or should combine multiple different herbal supplements!

Number one, combining herbal supplements might interfere with the effectiveness of your existing prescribed medications.

Second, if you prefer to brew and drink your herbal supplements for fertility, do not mix them together! This will leave you with a herbal tea mixture that doesn’t taste well.

Although you want to increase your chances of pregnancy, you want to do them happily and not feel like your forced to drink a nasty herbal tonic each day!

Remember that trying to conceive is a journey and every woman’s journey is different!

So try and enjoy the experience you have and think about these five lesser-known herbs that may boost your chances of conceiving!
