6 New Year’s Resolutions To Make For Your Fertility In 2023

“My New Year’s Resolution this year is to have a baby!” Does that sound familiar? I use to say this every year while I was trying to conceive.

Every year I would think, “This is going to be my year. I’m going to be a mom.”

But it never happened for almost three years!

Don’t get me wrong, having a baby is a great resolution.

But it if doesn’t happen by the end of the year, you’re left with bitter disappointment.

New Year’s Resolutions For Fertility

1. Try to eliminate toxins

I do say “try” because it does take a lot of work to try and remove harmful toxins completely from your life.

You do need to be aware of the different types of fertility harming chemicals and toxins and where they are found in everyday objects.

Instead of vowing to have a baby for your resolution, try to eliminate toxins to get rid of anything holding you back from having a baby!

Some fertility harmful toxins to eliminate from your life include:

  1. BPA
  2. Harsh chemicals (cleaning agents like detergent, kitchen cleaning products and more)
  3. Pesticides
  4. Synthetic fragrances
  5. Parabens

This is a short list of some of the toxins linked to disrupting hormones and reducing fertility overtime.

Unfortunatly, many of these toxins are in items you have in your house right now and probably do not even know it!

Removing toxins for fertility requires doing an overhaul of all the products you purchase.

This is not something that happens overnight, but gradually.

2. Pick the right supplements

I have many article on this website about supplements for fertility and also for anxiety and depression.

However, taking fertility supplements does not mean you need to take every supplement there is!

You need to find the right supplement for you!

Some fertility supplements work well for other women while some do not. It all depends on what you are needing help with.

I highly recommend always talking to your healthcare provider before starting any supplements!

All natural supplements have the potential to interfere with prescribed medications.

Plus, some fertility supplements can actually give you adverse effects if you are taking them and not actually needing them.

(Natural supplements intended to promote a healthy monthly cycle may actually stop your period and interfere with ovulation).

3. Test your fertility

New Year’s resolutions like this one are for any couples who have been trying for over one year!

Once you hit the one year mark of trying to conceive, it’s official time to start looking into fertility testing.

Now, just because you are testing your fertility does not mean you will need fertility treatment like IUI or IVF.

They are just tests to make sure you are capable of conceiving.

Then, you and your partner can make the choice to keep trying naturally or go forward with fertility treatment.

After two and a half years of infertility I will admit that going forward with fertility testing is a HUGE decision and requires a lot of bravery.

It’s hard to admit to yourself that there might be a problem, let alone undergo a variety of tests to that could either do one of two things:

-Ease your mind of any questions you had about your ability to conceive a baby

-Scare the hell out of you because you’ve now know for sure something is wrong with you or your partner’s fertility

But sometimes the best way to fix the problem and (possibly) ease your mind is to have some fertility testing done.

Although I was absolutely terrified to get an HSG scan done, it was the best decision I made and was worth every penny I spent out of pocket for it (most insurances will not cover it!).

FYI- An HSG test is an X-ray that looks at your fallopian tubs and uterus to see if your tubes are blocked.

While it was terrifying to possibly receive bad news that my tubes were blocked, it was better to know then to continue agonizing month after month of trying to conceive and wasting thousands every month for (future) fertility treatment that would not work because of the blockage.

Along with an HSG scan, a fertility doctor can also suggest other tests to rule out any other factors affecting your chances of conceiving and a sperm analysis for your spouse.

4. Reduce jealousy

This is a big one! Jealousy is a very real feeling when your trying to conceive.

Every pregnancy announcement, baby shower invitation, and pregnant women or small baby you see has you asking the question, “Why not ME?”

I get it! You have every right to feel that way! I’m not saying you’re being ridiculous for feeling jealous of others, it’s just that those feelings of jealousy are not good for your overall mental health.

Jealousy leads to bitterness about trying to conceive. Make it a resolution to try and feel less jealousy and envy toward others.

You can do this by reminding yourself with the following: “I do not know the fertility struggles someone has had.”

If you deal with feelings of envy and bitterness, you’re not alone.

After 2 1/2 years of infertility, fertility treatment, and two babies later, I still struggle with feelings of jealousy toward couples who can conceive naturally.

For my husband and I, we will never know what it’s like to have sex and get pregnant.

We need the help of fertility treatment to conceive.

5. Get serious about tracking ovulation

New Year’s resolutions like tracking ovulation are for couples who are just starting on their fertility journey.

If you’ve been having sex as often as possible, taking vitamins, and eating right you could still be missing your fertile window.

While making love whenever you want keeps the spark alive in a relationship, very specific timed sex is how you conceive a baby!

There are multiple methods for tracking ovulation and if you’ve only been tracking on a calendar, then maybe this year is the year to try more effective methods.

Or better yet, combining another method of tracking ovulation onto your existing one!

For instance, if you tracking your basal temperature for a few months, consider adding in digital ovulation sticks to help you identify your most fertile days.

6. Focus on fertility enhancing foods

The foods you eat directly influence how your body feels and operates.

If you want to increase your fertility dramatically, feed it fertility enhancing foods!

Such foods as:

  1. Beans and lentils are packed with folate (folic acid), iron and protein to help a baby develop a proper nervous system, balance hormones, and drop your risk of anovulation.
  2. Berries provide antioxidants, folate, and vitamin C to promote fetal growth, aid weight loss and balance hormones.
  3. Avocadoes help to improve the uterine lining to increase the odds of implantation due to high amounts of vitamin E
